Ireland as an AI hub: adapting intelligently to empower growth and innovation

Donal Travers

Head of Technology, IDA Ireland

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a critical driver of economic growth, with forecasts estimating it could add €250 billion to the Irish economy by 2035, highlighting its transformative potential across industries.

AI offers a range of benefits for businesses, including enhanced operational efficiency and improved customer engagement. For over two decades, Ireland has been laying the groundwork to capitalise on the breakthroughs in machine learning and large language models. Global companies recognise this, such as Microsoft, which recently chose Ireland to invest in advancing its global AI innovation, creating 550 new jobs in engineering and R&D to pioneer the development of new AI technologies.

Making businesses AI-ready

While opportunities are immense, businesses must embrace several challenges to fully leverage AI, and Ireland must continue to put in place the framework and support to bring these opportunities to fruition. As AI adoption accelerates, clear guidelines and regulations will be imperative for future success. Ireland’s National AI Strategy serves as a roadmap to leverage the potential of AI for productivity. This sits alongside the EU AI Act, which introduces guidelines for AI deployment to help businesses ensure compliance and promote responsible AI use.

Ireland as an AI hub

Strengthening Ireland’s position as a global leader in innovation and digital transformation with a focus on AI is at the core of IDA Ireland’s strategy, ‘Adapt Intelligently: A Strategy for Sustainable Growth and Innovation 2025–29.’ By promoting AI adoption, transforming businesses through research and development, nurturing a skilled workforce and championing sustainable practices, IDA Ireland is committed to helping businesses harness the full potential of artificial intelligence.

In tandem, the country’s strong talent pool, supported by upskilling initiatives, is well-positioned for businesses to leverage AI effectively. This foundation can drive long-term growth and ensure a competitive edge in the global digital economy.

Ireland has one of the highest EurAI fellows per capita — an accolade bestowed by the European Association of Artificial Intelligence. This, coupled with our unique ecosystem, allows for easy collaboration and access to cutting-edge research. Supported by a strong regulatory environment, Ireland is well-positioned for the future of AI and all that comes with it.
